Recently, I finished the processing of several photographs which I took for my friend and amazing modeler Dmitry Skurkis. He has two ready models: one is for gift and another for his own collection. Some time ago, I and my wife bought a bottle of our favorite alcohol beverage, a port wine. This time, it was Cockburn’s Fine Ruby. Wonderful beverage! Of course, if you know how to drink it correctly. (I mean, not to drink it warm and shot by shot. The opposite, as it should be drunk: with several ice cubes, doing a little sip, relaxing and getting enjoy.) Plus, I liked its bottle a lot. Already after we finished, I decided to photograph it. Yes, I should have been thought about how to shoot the empty bottle beautifully. And I thought about it several times. Finally, I was ready. Actually, I didn’t want to take an ordinary commercial shot. I wanted to show this bottle in a slight art manner. Honestly, I’m satisfied with the result although I didn’t have the majority of the appropriate equipment. My dad carefully saves his father’s medals. I’ve seen them a lot of times and about a year ago I thought to photograph some. And only now I’ve finally made this thought to reality. My choice was this very medal called “Medal of Patriotic War”. Here I should give some explanations. The point is that in Russia (earlier in the Soviet Union), the Second World War always was conditionally divided on two parts: WWII (from 1st September 1939 till 2nd September 1945) and The Great Patriotic War (from 22nd June 1941 till 8th May 1945) which means that after the Nazi invasion to the Soviet Union territory, WWII became a patriotic war for the Soviet people. That’s why this medal has such a title. That’s my granddad, Leninslav Korovkin (by the way, his name “Leninslav” is quite interesting nowadays although it was very normal in the Soviet Union, and it means “Glory to Lenin”): On the photo, you can see that he got a squint eye. That’s a result of a splinter hit. Here, he’s a Guard Sergeant of the Red Army. He started WWII in the infantry as a Private in 17 years old (he lied about his age in the recruitment office). He accepted the baptism of fire in Stalingrad in winter 1942-43. Since 1943 till the Nazi capitulation, he was a scout of the 41st separate reconnaissance troop. He’s got five combat awards including medals “For Combat Merits”, “For Warsaw Capture”, and “For Berlin Capture”. I do remember him but I didn’t know him well. He didn’t like children even if they are his grandchildren. He almost nothing told about the war. Then, when I was 7 years old, I didn’t understand why. When I was a kid, our family every year went to the village by train. It was still at the end of the Soviet Union. I don’t know why but I always loved to go somewhere already then especially in the case of a railroad trip. I eagerly absorbed the impressions: railway terminal with its bustling, a platform with its locomotive smells, changing of landscapes behind the window, hot tea with a shortcake… When we settled in our seats, I looked forward to the train moving off. I was overwhelmed with a sense of promising “unknown” − for some reason it seemed to me that something exciting and remarkable is ahead. When a conductor brought a hot tea in a faceted glass with a tin or steel glass-holder it was a whole task: to drink a tea with pleasure but simultaneously don’t get burnt and don’t pour with boiling water sitting in a swaying wagon. I remember very well how I burned my palms by these glass-holders! Recently, my mom showed me one such glass-holder. Not the new copy but the original Soviet one. And I got the idea to take a photograph of this item, moreover, it turned out a bit more interesting than the ones that came across to me in the trains. It has a volumetric drawing of the Kremlin.
