Honestly, I doubt that I can say something new about black and white photography. No matter what, I would try to you certainly already read or heard it. So, if you don’t mind, I will tell you what I feel about it.

When I come home from another photoshoot and start to look through my source files, I quickly find the images that I suppose to turn black and white. How can I choose them? How do I realize that? Actually, I don’t know. I just feel it. I look at the photo and suddenly understand that it won’t be interesting in colour for some reason. Then I turn it into b&w and immediately see why: the image becomes laconic and more impressive than its colour version.

But not always happen this way. Sometimes, I deliberately go to the spot that I know will look wonderful without colour in particular light conditions. It was so with my “Peterhof” photo series for example. But not only.

Perhaps, I would compare photography with music. If a colour image is, for instance, progressive metal or symphonic music with all their richness and versatility of sound, black and white photography is minimalism with its accuracy and piercing sensuality.
