Photography details

“A”

It is a huge flat rock that slopes gently into the water from the shore; its upper layer is cut here and there by streams of water flowing back into the ocean in the receding waves.

“A Middle Aged”

Denis Churin photographer

This tree stood a little apart from the forest, as if it had emerged from the crowd; not because it despised others, but as if it simply wanted a little privacy.

“Alone in the Crowd”

This is a pine tree without bark, giving its trunk a reddish-brown appearance in a snow-covered forest among normal trees. Thus, trees can be beautiful and eye-catching even without being alive.

“Blues”

The coastline on a windy evening, shortly after sunset, with huge waves crashing onto rocks and cliffs and then returning to the ocean, over and over again. 4-second exposure.

“Brothers”

These trees stood a little apart from the forest, as if they had stepped out of the crowd like two brothers, similar but not the same.

“Lonely”

This olive tree stood alone in the middle of an abandoned field, overgrown with tall grass and unplowed for many years, a rare sight in Portugal.

“Overlord”

A pedunculate oak tree, 191 years old at the time of photographing, stands 17 meters tall, with a trunk diameter of approximately 2 meters at 1.3 meters above ground level and a crown diameter of approximately 23 meters.

“Sands of Time”

An old fence covered in sand on the Atlantic Ocean shore. An eloquent symbol of the inexorable passage of time.

“Serenity”

A view of the Atlantic Ocean from a deserted sandy beach on a cool spring day before the tourist season begins.

“Shining”

The light of the setting sun transformed this beautiful, rolling forest edge with a few trees into something reminiscent of the Shire from “The Lord of the Rings”: a magical glow and a slight haze completed this beautiful view.

“Spring in Provence 1”

These few birches stood on the outskirts of the spring forest, where some trees and bushes were already covered with fresh green leaves, while others were still naked and therefore looked especially fragile.

“Spring in Provence 2”

A few young trees and bushes stood on the outskirts of the spring forest, where some trees were already covered with fresh green leaves, others just started to wake from the winter sleep, showing their flowers before their green dresses, and some were still naked and therefore looked especially fragile.

“Spring in Provence 3”

Three young trees without leaves yet, against the background of a couple of bushes, stood on the outskirts of the spring forest. One bush is already covered with fresh green leaves, the other one has colorful twigs even without leaves, and those trees look especially fragile in their touching modesty.

“Sunlight Geometry 1”

The light of the setting sun turned this beautiful field on the slope of the hill into a geometrically precise combination of lines and shadow/light edges. The sun was low and therefore emphasized all textures, making a flat field look three-dimensional, with easily distinguishable tracks, and stretched the shadows through almost the whole frame.

San Vito village, Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, Italy. September 2023.

“Sunlight Geometry 2”

The light of the setting sun pierced through the dense forest somewhere behind the frame’s edge, laying the long spots on the recently mowed field. In the lowest spot, on the very edge of it, there’s a tiny figure of a cat, sitting, thinking, observing.

“Sunlight Geometry 3”

The light of the setting sun turned this beautiful field at the foot of the slope of the hill into a geometrically precise combination of lines and shadow/light edges. The sun was low and therefore caught two trees in the shadow part of the image, presenting them in the best view, making all three trees glow in its divine light, and stretched the shadows through the frame.

“The Different One”

This fragile, thin tree stood against the common flow: the mountain slope and leaning tree trunks. It’s young and small but has a bold character, although just a few brown leaves are left since autumn.

Not far from Manteigas town, Serra de Estrela, Portugal. January 2025.

“The Ocean Breath”

This was a unique moment: a dense fog covered the beach along with two big rocks standing in the water, but the sun somehow pierced the blanket of the mist and lit the rocks with the diffused sunset light, turning the whole scene into a magical combination of controversial weather options. Long ocean surf caught with a long exposure completed the picture, making it look like the ocean breathed.

“The Queen”

This is the famous Sainte-Victoire mountain, a frequent hero of Paul Cezanne’s paintings. It consists mainly of white rock, which is why it takes the light color almost fully, and therefore looks golden in this sunset one. A small olive garden in the front and a cross on the top allow us to understand the size of this beautiful mountain.

“There”

This forest is located in the biological park on the mountain above my home city in Portugal. Besides a few big spaces for different animals and birds, it also has such wonderful forest parts that look almost wild; moreover, in the autumn fog, even mystical.

Parque Biológico de Lamego, Lamego city, Portugal. October 2022.

“Tranquility 1”

The calm surface of the lake few minutes before sunrise, reflects the foot and part of the slope of a mountain in the Dolomites. Incomparably beautiful color of water caused by the mountain rocks, trees of the coniferous forest stood still, and the mountain grandeur filled that moment with a silent admiration. The lines formed by crumbling rock and their reflections in the water made the composition asymmetrical from left to right, while the shore divides the frame into two geometrically equal parts, which made it symmetrical from top to bottom.

“Tranquility 2”

A close view of the calm surface of the lake few minutes before sunrise, that reflects the slope of a mountain in the Dolomites. The wonderful color of water caused by the mountain rocks, trees of the coniferous forest stood still filled that moment with a quiet fascination. The lines formed by crumbling rock and their reflections in the water made the composition clearly asymmetrical from left to right, forming something reminding an arrow that leads the eye. Simultaneously, the shore divides the frame into two geometrically equal parts, which makes it symmetrical from top to bottom.

“Twilight Bridge”

A freezingly cold evening with a piercing wind over the bridge, lit with city lights, under the darkening, dramatic skies. And a couple of human figures rushing somewhere, wrapped up in coats, trying in vain to shield themselves from the wind.

The Palace Bridge, a view from the Vasilyevsky Island side, Saint-Petersburg, Russia. November 2019.

“Venice 1”

A classical view of the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute at the end of the Grand Canal in Venice. Twilight had just started turning the sky into indigo blue, while houses and basilica themselves are colored by the setting sun’s light reflected from the clouds somewhere behind the edge of the frame. Long exposure let the moving boats disappear, with only their navigational lights remaining as light trails. The city is alive, but the falling night is turning it into a mysterious place.

“Venice 2”

A view of the Grand Canal in Venice. Twilight was almost replaced by night with a dark blue sky, although there were still some red shades on the horizon. Houses are lit with the street lights, gondolas look blurred, being caught on the long exposure, while they gently swayed on the waves. The city is definitely alive, although this shot shows a unique picture: just a few figures in one of the most famous cities in the world.

“Venice 3”

A view of a small river in Venice called Rio de S.Vio, which flows to the Grand Canal. Twilight was already in full power, making the sky look intense blue above houses, embankment, and bridges lit with city lights reflected in dark water. Long exposure made the walking people blurred and the water silky smooth in this city, awaking from the heavy nap during the humid and muggy day to live its nightlife.

“Walking the Path of Light”

An abstract picture full of color and shapes made by intricate edges between light and shadow turns out to be a volcanic landscape scene with a lonely, tiny figure walking the path when we look at it closer. Interesting duality of nature that can be noticed and beholden quite often if we are attentive and patient enough.

“World For a Couple”

A sunny day somewhere around the Teide volcano peak was quickly turning into a cold, windy, and disturbing state, where huge billowing clouds descended onto the mountain slopes, surrounding its top. Two tiny figures were persistently walking their path in this huge world just for them.

“World For Three”

A cold, windy, and disturbing day, when huge billowing clouds descended onto the mountain slopes, almost touching its foot, surrounding its top. Three tiny figures were walking on the edge of the volcanic hill, giving us a clear picture of how huge this world can appear compared to humans.
